PARTICUOLOGY is a term coined to parallel,in a single word,the Chinese title for the science and technologyof particles颗粒学(keli-xue).The present voiumechrqnicles the research results in particuology in ChinaJapan and USA as reported in a trilateral symposium held in Beijing from September 5 to 8,1988,
As an interdisciplinary field,particuology deals with all particulate materials such as soil,sand and dust that occur in nature,with wheat,rice beans,salt and cane sugar which we eat,.with artifacts such as ground coal,catalysts,cement,fertilizers,pigments,medicines and explosives.
Study of the basic properties,behavior and phenomena related to these particulate materiali,therefore,constitute a field of fu ndamental significance to the chemical,metallurgical,energy and light industries,as well as to environmental protection,national defence and the health services.
Included in the present proceedings are investigations on particle measurement and characterization,the effect of physical properties on particulate materials,transport of granular solids, the practice and theory of grindingaerosols fluidization,problems in liquid.solid systemsetc.
The principal organizers for the above research output are Professor Genii Jimbo of Nagoya University in Japan and Vice President of Japans Society of Powder Technglogy,Professor John Keith Beddow of the Universi ty of lowa in USA and Secretary-General of the American Fine Particle Society,and Professor Mooson Kwauk,Director Emeritus of the Insfitute of Chemical Metallu rgy of fhe Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of the Chinese Society of Particuology.
The contents of this volume are well suited for universities,research and design institutes and all people engaged in work concerned with particulate matters,be that in natural science,engineering or in manufacturing technologies.
